Working
in Partnership with Parents: The Parent Adviser Model
is
valuable reading for all who work with parents. The following
quotes are offered as a ‘taster’ –
Page
12: ‘Nothing here is intended to deny or diminish the specific
technical expertise of existing….professionals. Their knowledge
of diagnosis, assessment and intervention is crucial. However,
unless a working relationship is established and methods are effectively
communicated to the satisfaction of the parents, this expertise
is of little value, and the opportunity for the provision of emotional
development and support is lost.’

30: ‘We are advocating that changes are needed in how we
work individually and how we coordinate. There is a need for all
of us to work together as a coordinated community of helpers with
shared aims that acknowledge parents as people and their importance
in the development and well-being of their children. Doing this
will increase the resources available, but will also enable and
facilitate parents’ own resources and hence the overall outcomes,
once given the opportunity of working in partnership.’
