4. Harrogate Action for Inclusive Leisure (HAIL)

Karan McGrath writes -

North Yorkshire Children’s Fund are funding Barnardo’s Grove Road Inclusion Services (GRIS) to support disabled children and young people aged 5-13 years living in the Harrogate district to attend mainstream leisure activities.

HAIL provides support for children/young people to access/attend mainstream leisure activities such as Rainbows, Cubs, Drama, Athletics, Youth Clubs, Horse Riding, Football etc.

Referrals to the service can be made by the child/young person themselves, their parent/carer, teacher, social worker or another organisation working with that child/young person.

Trained sessional workers and volunteers assist children and young people to take part in the activities and give support for up to six weeks.  Depending on the child/young person’s needs, support may be extended for a period of up to 12 weeks.

After this period of time, Barnardo’s workers ensure that staff working at the various groups and organisations are given the relevant training so they have the skills and expertise to continue supporting the child/young person in their chosen activity.
