Date: Tuesday 2nd November
Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Venue: Kings Fund, London
Tutor: Caroline Gashi Refugee Action

This course is designed to provide a very broad introduction to some of the issues commonly faced by people who do not speak fluent English and it will be of particular relevance to anyone who works in a setting where information, services or support are provided to the public.

The aims of the course are to:

" Define the terms - refugee; asylum-seeker; immigrant; translation; interpretation
" Identify some of the cultural issues surrounding the use of language
" Give practical hints on maximising communication with people who have some basic English and on working with interpreters
" Explore some of the wider inclusion issues linked to language with specific reference to the barriers faced by women, older people and disabled people
" Explain how to use the reception and welcome pack (details below) and other available resources

All participants will receive a free copy of the 'breaking through the language barriers' reception and welcome pack.

This pack is a valuable resource for any organisation that may be approached for help by people whose first language is not English. It consists of tips on working with non-English speakers, a language identification guide, which will help you identify the language your 'client' is speaking, and a body of translated reception and welcome phrases. The pack will also be available on CD for use by those who are visually impaired or who do not have written language skills.

The 'Breaking Through the Language Barriers' reception and welcome pack was originally produced by Liverpool Translation & Interpreting Service in partnership with the Community Legal Service. It contains helpful phrases and proformas in 20 different languages and it will be particularly relevant for anyone working in a health setting, or in an organisation that provides advice, information and support.
