Intervention – International Perspectives and Parent Thoughts
PDC/145/05
Led by: Professor Barry Carpenter, Chief
Executive, Sunfield School
Barry Carpenter is Chief Executive at Sunfield School and
Honorary Professor at University College Worcester.
He has written widely on Early Intervention, building on parental
experience and teaching practice in this area. He represents
the UK on the European Working Group on Early Intervention,
and is currently on the World Organising Committee of the
International Society for Early Intervention.
Early Childhood Intervention is a major element of the Government’s
SEN Strategy, ‘Removing Barriers to Achievement’, through
a variety of national and regional initiatives (e.g. Early
Support Pilot Programme), there is, at long last, the opportunity
to secure nationally co-ordinated strategy for E.I.
Through a series of short lecture inputs, workshops, reflections
and discussions, participants will be able to examine current
International/European thinking around Early Intervention.
Even more so, they will be able to hear the voice of families,
as to their hopes and aspirations for high quality E.I.
There will be a specific input on the ‘Changing Patterns of
Childhood Disability’, exploring new evidence in relation
to pre-term infants, foetal alcohol syndrome etc. The future
challenges for Early Intervention and the shaping of services
will conclude the day.

Led by: Dave Hewett, Freelance Trainer
and Consultant
Dave is a freelance trainer and consultant
for staff working in the field of learning difficulties.
Previously he was Head teacher of Harperbury Hospital School,
Hertfordshire, but has been working nationwide with staff
from all professions over the last seven years. He has

as enjoying being with another person, giving sustained attention,
turn-taking, use and understanding of eye contact, facial
expressions, body language and non-verbal signalling.
The course will include
extensive use of video examples. Comprehensive handouts
will be given. Course members should expect to work
in a warm humorous and supportive atmosphere.

Very Special
Mathematics
PDC/175/05
Led by: Les Staves, Independent Educational
Consultant
Les has worked with
SLD and PLD children since 1973 and was head teacher of a
special school; he retired after an outstanding Ofsted report.
He now provides training sessions and workshops, related to
Mathematics for very special pupils in schools and for LEAs
and other organisations across the country. As an independent
consultant he has written special needs materials and provided
training for the National Numeracy Strategy, and worked on
P Scale exemplification for the QCA. His book “ Mathematics
for children with severe or profound learning difficulties”
published by David Fulton Press has inspired readers from
advisers to teaching assistants.
Les delivers
a colourful description using a wealth of illustrative resources.
He covers why Mathematics is an important facet of learning
for pupils with very special needs. How children establish
early mathematical concepts, right from the beginning of sensory
appreciation of quantity, time and space, through to how children
learn about counting and the fundamental processes of numeracy
and calculation.
The course will support
special teachers in their interpretation of the Numeracy Strategy
for very special pupils. Discussion of QCA guidelines and
examples about how to enhance P Levels and develop appropriate
curriculum content and resources will enable teachers to promote
useful mathematical skills both in the daily numeracy lesson
and across the curriculum.

Illustrating the processes of
