Contacts with acute general hospitals. Experiences
of families/carers of people with a learning disability: a review
of progress and future challenges
Presented by:
Dr. Owen Barr
Senior Lecturer in Nursing
Institute of Nursing Research & School of Nursing
University of Ulster
Magee Campus
Londonderry
N Ireland
This presentation
will review evidence of the changing patterns of morbidity and
mortality among people with learning disabilities and consider
the implications of such changes for the contact people with intellectual
disabilities may have with acute general hospital services. The
reported experience of people with intellectual disabilities who
have contact with acute general hospitals will be considered from
the perspective of people with learning disabilities, their carers
and nurses within these services. An overview will be provided
of the development of services to support the effective inclusion
of people with learning disabilities and steps that have been
taken to promote equity of access to healthcare. This presentation
will conclude with a consideration of some key challenges that
remain to achieving the policy objectives of inclusive services
for people with intellectual disabilities and suggest steps that
may be taken to overcome these challenges.
