The
Conference:
In
1999 the Government pledged to end child poverty. Following this
announcement 700,000 children have been lifted out of poverty.
Despite this, the UK still has one of the highest child poverty
rates in the rich world – 28% of the child population, 3.5 million
children across the country. The Government is still committed
to halving child poverty by 2010 and eradicating it by 2020. The
aim is to improve the current well being of children and also
to transform their prospects to ensure that, in future, all children
are able to lead rich and fulfilling lives in childhood and to
realise their potential as adults.
This
important one day conference will focus on the government’s strategies
and targets to reduce child poverty. It will explore the nature
and extent of child poverty in the UK and will focus on the Children
Act and the new duty on local authorities to ensure children’s
economic and social well being. The conference will also investigate
the effects of poverty on education, well being and health.
The
event will also explore End Child Poverty’s ‘Ten for a Million
Charter’, which is supported by over 40 national charities. The
charter proposes ten radical policies which would take a million
children in the UK out of poverty and in so doing, meet the government’s
pledge to halve child poverty by 2010.
