20. Warning from Australia that mobile phones are ‘more dangerous
than smoking or asbestos’

Peter Limbrick writes – Geoffrey Lean, Environmental Editor of the Independent on Sunday, writing in the paper on 30th March 2008 said:

Brain expert warns of huge rise in tumours and calls on industry to take immediate steps to reduce radiation

…The study by Dr. Vini Khurana – who holds professorial posts at Sydney University, the Australian National University and the Canberra Medical School – is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks. It draws on growing evidence…that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer…Earlier this year, the French government warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children (P.L’s emphasis). Germany also advises its people to minimise handset use, and the European Environment Agency has called for exposures to be reduced…(Dr. Khurana)…concludes that “there is significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumours”…that will be “definitively proven” in the next five to 10 years.

Comment by Peter Limbrick: It is my belief that there is enough information amassed already from research around the world to indicate very strongly that we are being irresponsible if we expose babies, children and young people to wi-fi laptops, cordless DECT phones, remote wi-fi baby alarms - and to mobile phone base stations close to homes and schools.

The UK government chooses to remain unconcerned because the mobile phone industry is a very rich and powerful lobby. What is more surprising is that I know of no UK children’s organisation or disability organisation that is concerned either. We are all happy to take the risk this technology brings – even though our children will pay the price for it.
