9. MOVE: Enabling the team around the child to teach the skillsneeded for independent sitting, standing and walking…

MOVE Practitioner Training – Enabling the whole team around the disabled child to teach the skills needed for independent sitting, standing and walking to the best of their ability.

MOVE is a practical mobility and movement programme designed specifically to teach children and young adults with complex disabilities and health needs the functional motor skills needed for independent movement through a combination of education and therapy.

The Programme works with the whole team around the child including teachers, therapists, parents and classroom assistants by placing a structure around the work that is already taking place, bringing services together and encouraging collaborative working at all levels.

The MOVE Programme is based on the principle that we have to be able to move in order to learn about our environment, and is designed to help anyone who has not learnt to sit, stand or walk by the age that they should have.

As a practical approach, it can easily be incorporated into a school or organisation’s day and home life to help disabled children to lead the healthiest and happiest lives possible.

Why MOVE?

Research proves children with motor impairments should experience the functional skills of sitting, standing and walking at the normal chronological age in order to ensure best development of bones and muscles.

MOVE provides a framework which meets many aspects of the Every Child Matters Agenda, physical development goals in individual Learning Profiles, annual review targets, transition profiles and care standards.

MOVE has helped to improve OFSTED reports in many of the schools using the Programme, with positive comments including: “The promotion of equality of opportunity is a major strength of the school. This is illustrated through the MOVE Programme”

MOVE strengthens a school/organisations physical development provision for children and adults with complex physical needs.

How to get involved

MOVE holds Open Practitioner courses throughout the year at a cost of £250 per delegate. The course covers the MOVE framework including the establishment of the team, assessing the young person’s current abilities, the setting of goals, teaching mobility skills including prompt reduction, and maintaining skills for the future.

The next and final course for this year will be held on 7th-8th October in London. Alternatively, MOVE offers in-house courses for schools, centres, hospital departments and PCT’s at a cost of £2,290 for up to 25 members of staff.

For more information on courses, please contact Kyra@move-europe.org.uk , or if you would like to find out more about the MOVE Programme, please email Conchita at Conchita@move-europe.org.uk
