Course Title: Improving the opportunities and independence
of children with autism within the home, school and community
settings
Date:
Postponed until autumn 2008
Duration:
One day
Age Range:
Pre-school to KS2
Level:
Introductory
Course Description:
Much of the input children
with autism receive occurs within school settings. This
can limit the learning and teaching opportunities for children
with autism and can leave parents feeling excluded from their
child’s education and overall development. This course aims
to provide examples of skills that can be taught within the home

such as task analysis, chaining and using reinforcement to increase
skills in key areas will be discussed and practised. Reducing
socially excluding behaviours will also be discussed.
From this
course you will gain:
§
An understanding
of how different settings can produce different opportunities
for teaching and learning
§
Opportunities to
discuss and identify potential targets within the areas of communication,
daily living skills and independence
§
Opportunities to
learn and practice techniques such as task analysis, chaining
and prompt fading.
§
An understanding
of the function of socially excluding behaviours and how these
limit social opportunities.
Who should
attend? Parents, carers,
respite workers, activity club workers, play workers and teachers.
