Since launching at the CCNUK
National Conference in November 2008, SNIP’s DVD ‘The Search – In Pursuit
of the Perfect Professional’ and workshop has been well received at conferences
across Britain. Written by SNIP’s Young People’s Information and Advocacy
Worker, Colin Young, the short film follows three young guys who use a video
dating service to advertise for their perfect professional. This DVD;

Creates a humorous insight into a young man’s
experience as he braves the dating scene looking for his dream “date” –
service providers
§
Ironically reflects the constant intrusions that young
disabled people confront during their lives.
§
Demonstrates the incompetence of professionals who
fail to communicate effectively with young people
§
Highlights the loss of identity that can be
experienced by young people when they are not listened to
§
Illustrates the benefits of positive attitudes upon
the relationship between the young person and professional
Through the workshop,
participants are invited to use the issues raised in the DVD to reflect on
their own practice and how to support young people who have had or are going
through similar experiences. The workshop’s activities will offer participants
the opportunity to identify:

good practice towards young disabled people within
their own service
§
areas of their practice towards young disabled people
that may need improving
§
ways of making their service more adaptable to the
individual needs of young disabled people
§
ways of encouraging and enabling young disabled people
to instruct their service on the best way to suit their needs

how they can make information about their service more
accessible
